The Fine Art of Button Arranging
Florists are specially trained to arrange flowers for maximum aesthetic effect. In many cases this practice has become an exquisite art form. For instance, the Japanese art of floral arranging, Ikebana, is so highly valued that Japanese women are traditionally schooled in it, along with calligraphy and tea ceremony.
But what about the art of button arranging? Courtney Patuba stopped by our office last week carrying a masterfully coordinated set of a-list schwagbuttons. You can see from the photo how well she contrasts the monolithic beauty of the Sony Playstation button against the indie-cred of Catster and the anti-establishment grunge of Bre Pettis’ “I Make Things“, a DIY videoblog .
But what makes Courtney a master craftswoman is her juxtaposition of these notable sources with the sublimely obscure. The orange mask button is illustrator Derek Kirk Kim’s personal emblem, and the photo-button at the top is hand-made by Courtney herself–a loving tribute to her boyfriend’s zine, Stray. All together, the composition is a marvel of post-modern iconography.
Courtney is a rising schwagstar. Definitely one to watch.

I do like mixing up the sizes of buttons, and Bre’s button was the perfect candidate in size, color and subject matter. Most buttons are 1″ these days, must be the “rock show” image it gives off.
BTW, Robert made his “Stray” buttons himself!
